As the interest in ancient cultures among the Thai public has increased exponentially over the past years, this talk titled “Translating Babylonian to Thai: Challenges and Possible Models” given by Dr Peerapat Ouysook on 18 May 2023 at The Siam Society, addressed the demand for Thai translations of ancient literature by investigating the challenges in the formulation of the philological methodology for the translation of Babylonian texts into Thai.

The lecture also examined recent Thai translations of popular literary works in ancient languages that are not (yet) part of the Thai formal education/academia, such as the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Dialogues of Socrates by Plato (Ancient Greek), as well as adaptations of works by Cicero (Latin).

ในช่วงไม่กี่ปีที่ผ่านมานี้ มีชาวไทยที่ให้ความสนใจในวัฒนธรรมโบราณเพิ่มขึ้นเป็นจำนวนมาก การบรรยายย้อนหลังหัวข้อ “Translating Babylonian to Thai: Challenges and Possible Models” โดย ดร. พีรพัฒน์ อ่วยสุข จัดขึ้นที่สยามสมาคมฯ เมื่อวันที่ 18 พฤษภาคม 2566 จึงได้นำเสนอเกี่ยวกับความต้องการที่จะแปลวรรณกรรมภาษาโบราณเป็นภาษาไทย โดยวิเคราะห์ความท้าทายในการสร้างระเบียบวิธีทางภาษาศาสตร์ เพื่อใช้แปลวรรณกรรมจากยุคบาบิโลนให้เป็นภาษาไทย

การบรรยายครั้งนี้ยังได้วิเคราะห์ตัวบทวรรณกรรมภาษาโบราณชื่อดัง ฉบับแปลภาษาไทย ที่ยังไม่ได้ถูกบรรจุไว้ในการเรียนการสอนวรรณกรรมในประเทศไทย เช่น เรื่องอีเลียด โอดิสซีย์ และบทสนทนาของโสกราตีสโดยเพลโต (ภาษากรีกโบราณ) รวมถึงงานเขียนที่ดัดแปลงมาจากงานของซิเซโร (ภาษาละติน)
